The Hoa Lo Prison (Visual 1), later known to American prisoners of war as the ‘Hanoi Hilton’, was a prison used by the French colonists in Vietnam for political prisoners and later by North Vietnam for prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. There is now a Hilton Hotel in Hanoi, called the ‘Hilton Hanoi Opera Hotel’ (Visual 2), which opened in 1999. It was built decades after the Vietnam War was over, but Hilton carefully avoided reusing the dreaded name ‘Hanoi Hilton’.

  1. The Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi where American POW’s were housed was infamously referred to by them as the Hanoi Hilton. When the Hilton hotel came up in Hanoi,they,based on a suggestion by that all-knowing wunderkid- Thomas Masun, decided to name it a more musical Hanoi Opera Hilton. Thats how Thomas won that wonderful cycle you see him on in his facebook profile. The Vietnamese love cycles and the hilton management thought there would be no better to reward him than give him that cycle.

  2. (A) is a North Vietnam prison during the Vietnam War nicknamed the “Hanoi Hilton”. (B) is the the actual Hilton hotel in Hanoi called the Hilton Hanoi Opera Hotel thus avoiding the connotations associated with the name (A)

    The first visual is the Hanoi Hilton, the infamous POW camp operated by the Viet Cong. The second visual is the present Hilton hotel in Hanoi, which was named the Hilton Hanoi Opera Hotel.

    The latter was intentionally named in a way that it wouldn’t remind people of the former.
