QFI Guidelines

The Quiz Foundation of India has evolved into a vibrant and thriving group that has members from different walks of life, most of them are here in the hope of setting and answering quiz questions. We owe it to everyone in this community and to ourselves to make sure that this is a safe clutter-free space that promotes nothing but curiosity.

WhatsApp Group Guidelines

We have more than 1,400 members across our Whatsapp groups such as QFI Banter and QFI Announcements. To make the experience on these groups pleasant and frictionless, please follow these guidelines:

  1. If you’re posting a question, mark it with “Qn: …” so that it’s clear it’s a question and someone can even search for questions.
  2. Try and frame a “proper” question, the way you would if you were conducting a quiz. Keep it crisp, factual etc. If you can, try to avoid the bland (“What is the smallest province of France with an area of 150 sq km?” type) and the vague/opinion-based (“What is the Beatles’ best album?”). At a minimum, please fact check your question and answer and be prepared to back them up in case they are contested. The joy of setting an artful question based in fact and evidence, and seeing someone work it out and feel happy is in a nutshell what good QMing is about.
  3. Wait for 20-30 minutes and post the answer if it hasn’t been answered by then.
  4. If someone answers correctly, apart from marking it with a ✅, do post your answer with “Ans: …” so that again people can search etc. If you want to add some references etc. that’s good too.
  5. Avoid a lot of opinions and other “funda putting” in the answer e.g. of the form “This is one of the least known atrocities committed by ABC on XYZ”. This is not the time. Or place.
  6. Feel free to add hints etc while the question is “in play”, if you feel like it.
  7. A little bit of to and fro about the question/answer is OK, but it should be reasonable and relevant. Appreciation of a good question and/or answer is welcome, asking for more info about something, pointing out an issue etc. is also okay. However, please do not start or participate in long threads. If you have a serious point of contention with someone, please take it up separately with them.
  8. Limit yourself to posting a few questions each day, so as to not appear like spam and overwhelm others who may want to post. A good rule might be to wait for 2-3 questions by someone else before posting your next one.
  9. Post your question only after the previous one that was in play is closed, so that there aren’t multiple confusing threads running in parallel.
  10. Please use fair means (i.e. your own memory and CPU!) while answering questions. While everything is just a search query or LLM away from being answered, it disrespects the question setter and kills the vibe if you use unfair means.
  11. Do not post any text or media that is hateful, vulgar, unkind or NSFW (not safe for work). Please keep everything kind and polite. Transgressions will be viewed seriously and acted upon.
  12. Do not over-market anything i.e. your quiz event, your quiz company, your own brand etc. Adding your logo and link to every post is bad form. The only exception to this rule is official QFI event announcements that the admins/organizers may feel the need to post from time to time.

Freedom of expression is a legal constitutional right which makes sure that the government can’t target you for anything you say. It does not mean that you can say whatever you want wherever you want to, and everyone has to put up with it. Please use moderation in everything!

Some of this is admittedly subjective, and it’s certainly impossible to police this perfectly a 100% of the time and that is not the aim. We have to rely on each other’s good sense and goodwill to make sure the group is a useful, informative and fun place.
