184: The connection is the Charles Dickens book “Our Mutual Friend”. Desmond Hume, a character on Lost, named after the philosopher David Hume, is portrayed as a Dickens devotee, having read every Dickens novel but “Our Mutual Friend,” He was shown to carry a copy around with him intending it to be the last book he will read before his death. The American author John Irving has said in numerous interviews that “Our Mutual Friend” will be the last book he reads before dying. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, executive producers of Lost learned of this and were inspired to use it for Lost character Desmond Hume. In 2005, Paul McCartney released a song “Jenny Wren” on his Chaos and Creation in the Backyard album about the character of the same name from the book.
